Croatia Air Traffic: Results of Summer 2026 and looking ahead

Croatia consistently upgrades and diversifies its tourism infrastructure to ensure international visitors enjoy a seamless, high-quality travel experience, with modern air travel serving as a primary pillar of that effort. To sustain its position as a premier global destination, the country has focused heavily on upgrading its major air transport hubs, including Zagreb, Split, and Dubrovnik. These ongoing investments target terminal modernizations, streamlined border controls, and expanded ground handling capacities to accommodate surging seasonal demand.

Beyond physical infrastructure, Croatia actively partners with leading international carriers to broaden direct flight networks, connecting coastal getaways and inland cultural hubs to key global markets. One of the best examples of this is Ryanair and their impact on Croatian airspace.

Ryanair is gearing up to reinforce its presence at Franjo Tuđman Airport by stepping up departure numbers across several popular European sectors for summer 2027:

  • Double-Daily Links: Flights connecting Zagreb with London Stansted will jump from 11 departures per week to 14 (two per day), while Malta services will also achieve double-daily frequency following the addition of another weekly flight.
  • Daily & High-Frequency Routes: Basel connections will climb to eight weekly flights, while Palma de Mallorca shifts to a daily rotation. Service to both Dublin and Paris Beauvais will expand to six weekly rotations, and Paphos will see five flights per week.
  • Mediterranean Escapes: Routes serving Alicante, Corfu, and Naples will each expand to four weekly departures.
  • Central European Connections: The newly inaugurated link between Zagreb and Warsaw Modlin will remain active straight through the 2027 summer timetable.

Two Decades of Budget Aviation in Croatia

The expansion coincides with Ryanair marking its 20th year in the domestic aviation sector, tracing back to its inaugural London Stansted–Pula service in 2006. Over two decades, the airline has evolved into Croatia's dominant operator by volume, moving approximately 3.6 million flyers in 2024 before climbing to nearly 4.1 million by 2025.

According to carrier representatives, direct competition with legacy carrier Croatia Airlines dramatically altered local price dynamics, accelerated pandemic recovery, and opened affordable corridors between Europe and both Zagreb and coastal ports. Backing this footprint is a financial commitment exceeding $900 million, which established aircraft bases across Zagreb, Zadar, and Dubrovnik alongside scheduled arrivals in Split, Rijeka, Pula, and Osijek. The airline's localized footprint sustains more than 3,500 Croatian jobs, encompassing over 270 technical cockpit and flight crew roles.

Record Summer Influx: Croatian Hubs Reach Peak Volume

The airline's upcoming schedule changes come on the heels of banner midsummer arrival statistics. In July 2026, air gateways nationwide registered 2.355 million passenger arrivals and departures—a 1.7% increase (representing roughly 40,000 more flyers) relative to the 2.315 million counted in July 2025.

The country's top five airports processed 2.299 million of those travelers, accounting for nearly the entirety of national aviation throughput:

Tourist arrivals during the peak summer rush were heavily anchored by four primary European source nations, which collectively delivered 1.128 million visitors:

  • Germany: Retained its position as Croatia's largest outbound source, generating 380,000 air passengers.
  • United Kingdom: Trailed closely behind in the second position with 376,000 arrivals.
  • Poland: Yielded strong holiday traffic totaling 192,000 flyers.
  • France: Filled out the top cluster with 180,000 passengers entering through domestic terminals.
